We left weather well below zero, and were delighted to find ourselves in the lovely garden setting of Banyan Tree. The colors, flowers and pool were nurturing to our winter souls. We explored much of the beautiful island of Maui, but felt like we were coming home as our day trips concluded. One feature we looked for was a pool, and to find that without the busyness of a big resort was great. We took advantage of having our own kitchen making dinner at home several evenings and enjoying the wonderful fresh organic fruits and vegetables readily available at nearby farm stands. We would certainly stay here again when we return to Maui.
Reviews and Testimonials
of the Banyan Bed and Breakfast Retreat on Maui
June 21, 2012
We had the good fortune to be invited to record the Transit of Venus on June 5th 2012. This was a very difficult project requiring many hours atop Haleakala where the observatories are located. After each stressful day at the summit we could not wait to return to the rejuvenating peaceful environment of our bungalow at Banyan Tree House. Each morning we awoke to the gentle chirping of birds, the sweet aroma of the garden and our breakfast of muffins and fresh fruit. The staff went to great lengths to make our stay comfortable and enjoyable. The town, a short walk from our room, had a variety of excellent restaurants, shops and bakeries.
The rooms were clean, comfortable, spacious and bright, a perfect place to relax and unwind. I look forward to returning and picking up where I left off. Thank you Marty !

The owner of this establishment, Marty, is kind and personable. That warmth resonates throughout the establishment. Staying in the common areas such as Lahaina or Wailea are great if you want a vacation in a can. But if you want a retreat nearby one of the most incredible national parks in the U.S., the Banyan Tree House is the way to go. The price is reasonable, the staff is excellent, the views of the eastern shoreline are magnificent, the rooms are clean and unique, the beds are comfortable, and there is no way to have an unpleasant stay. The town of Makawao has great restaurants and is on the way to Haleakala. Do yourself a favor and avoid the overpriced nonsense that attracts most. Stay at the Banyan Tree House.

We stayed here for 6 days while on vacation in Maui. We were three adults and two kids and we rented two cottages. The grounds are beautiful, as others have said, lush and tropical and with sweeping views down to the ocean. The pool is just big enough for a real swim and there are hammocks and swings nestled in the huge banyan trees. Like other guests who come here, we liked the location, near Makawao and far from the hordes of resort tourists. Makawao is a funky and cool little place and it has one of the best bakerys on the island - Komodo bakery. Watch out, the donuts and guava filled pastries are addictive! The hotel is also close to excellent hikes and is so central that you can get to most beaches in less than 30 minutes.
The host of Banyan Tree is the unflappable Marty - he is very cool, very welcoming and when we had a mini crisis about our flights at the end of our visit, he smoothed the waters and promised to find space for us in his yoga studio if we could not get on the plane.
That's it though - come here, stay here, settle in and enjoy!
Wide open views and spaces!
Looking down on Makawao and the North Shore. Refreshing
upcountry Maui with the Banyan Tree House bed and breakfast.
The Banyan Retreat is centrally located in up country Maui, just outside the town of Makawao. About 15 minutes from Paia and the beaches on the Maui's north shore, Haleakala National Park is about an hour up the mountain. The towns of Haiku, Pukalani, Kula and HaliiMaile are all in the upcountry area.
The airport and Kahului are about a half hour away. Our guests usually find that little of the
island is far away.
